She became heiress to Aquitaine, the largest and richest of the provinces that would become modern France, when her brother, William Aigret, died as a baby.ĭuke William X died on Good Friday in 1137 while on a pilgrimage to Spain. She was highly educated for a woman of the time, and knew how to read, how to speak Latin, was well versed in music and literature, and enjoyed riding, hawking, and hunting. She was raised in one of Europe's most cultured courts, the birthplace of courtly love. Eleanor was named after her mother and called Ali鮯r, which means other Aenor in the langue d'oc, but it became Elé¡®or in the northern langue d'oil and in English. William and Æ®or's marriage had been arranged by his father and her mother, as Dangereuse was the long-time mistress of William IX of Aquitaine, the Troubador. The eldest of three children, her father was William X, Duke of Aquitaine, and her mother was Æ®or de Châ´¥llerault, the daughter of Aimeric I, Vicomte of Chatellerault and a woman named Dangereuse. She was Queen consort of both France and England in her lifetime. 1124 – Main Fontevrault, Anjou) was one of the wealthiest and most powerful women in Europe during the Middle Ages. Eleanor of Aquitaine ( Bordeaux, France, c. And there it was, that stone-dropping-into-a-well plunge of my heart." "Almost 10 years since I'd last seen the Fool. In his private study, he wonders, as enjoyably hopeless as ever, "Why did I come here, alone and sleepless, to dwell on tragedies and disasters that could never be undone … Why was it my duty to recall those I had lost, and mourn them still?" He reflects on the carving done years ago, of himself, the Fool and the wolf he bonded with Nighteyes, his wolf, is dead, but the Fool has been silent for too long. There are hints, though, that this man, once so key to the kingdom, hasn't quite given himself up to happiness. I was a respectable land-holder, a man of grapes and sheep now, a man of ploughs and shears, not knives and swords," he tells us, a little too firmly. "I was no longer an assassin, living to guard my king and carry out his quiet work. Hobb's assassin, trained in secret after being roughly dragged into the world of the royal Farseers as a child, hasn't killed anyone for a decade. Today, Fitz, as ever our depressive, clever-but-obtuse narrator, is in his 40s, enjoying his "haven of rest and peace" in Withywoods. Set in a medieval-esque world of castles and dragons, swords and rare, powerful magic, the Farseer and Tawny Man trilogies narrated, respectively, Fitz's fight to save the Farseer kingdom from internal and external threats, and the inscrutable Fool's use of Fitz as a weapon to fulfil his own opaque aims. Torey does not use one method, but incorporates many learning styles into her teaching in order to effectively reach out to each and every student according to the students needs. Besides for seeing her students with their many colors, Torey's teaching fits into this poem as well. Torey does not only look at the colors on the outside of her students but reaches in to understand who they truly are, even when there is no name for the color, and something seems truly indescribably, Torey sees its beauty. Some colors are strengths while others are weaknesses, but you must use all to complete a beautiful masterpiece. Each of Torey's students are unique and have many different colors to them it is these colors that make them so beautiful. Torey sees each student as an individual, and not a simple black and white picture. Torey's teaching philosophy fits so well with the poem "Colors" by Shell Silverstein,īut I'm told they look orange in the night. The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) (revised) (redone).New Swan Shakespeare Festival 2023 July 15 - September 9, 2023 I think there are two basic problems with the movie. "Parts of the film are chilling, charged with a relentlessly claustrophobic terror, but others fall flat. He told Playboy in 1983: "I'd admired Kubrick for a long time and had great expectations for the project, but I was deeply disappointed in the end result. However, the story came from King's 1977 novel of the same name, and he wasn't happy with the adaptation at all, although in recent years has praised it for contributing to the horror genre. Stanley Kubrick's 1980 film The Shining starring Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall is considered one of the greatest horror films ever made and is a pop culture staple thanks to moments like "Here's Johnny!" Jack Nicholson peering through axed in door in lobby card for the film 'The Shining', 1980. For a full discussion of these intertextual complexities (and the full text of the Hymn), see Intro. Moreover, the metamorphic story that Ovid’s Acoetes goes on to tell derives from the tradition represented by the long Homeric Hymn to Dionysus. In Ovid, by contrast, the captive identifies himself as Acoetes (582), which name was evidently taken from Pacuvius’ lost tragedy Pentheus (or Bacchae). This captive, who gives his name as Acoetes, proceeds to explain, in a lengthy inset narrative, how he became a follower of Bacchus.ĢOvid has evidently borrowed the motif of a follower of Bacchus taken prisoner by Pentheus from Euripides’ Bacchae, where the prisoner, who never gives his name, is the god himself in disguise. 1The famuli return, not with Bacchus, as Pentheus had ordered, but with a different prisoner - or so it would seem. One thing I particularly liked about the relationship between Daniel and Bel is that they don’t immediately jump into bed together. Bel has no idea he’d like the idea of controlling Daniel so much, but once he starts to reframe his beliefs about the other man, he at least wants to help protect him. Even his relationship with kink stems from trading security for a power exchange relationship about which he was never entirely honest. Daniel has given up on external redemption but does everything he can to contain the elements of his sleep disorder that he feels puts others at risk, even to his detriment. Unfortunately, it is almost as if he’s fighting the wrong battles. This narrative isn’t quite an “enemies to lovers” arc, but Bel must overcome significant ingrained beliefs about Daniel despite pressure from the rest of their small town.ĭaniel is a fairly tragic figure for most of this story, but even when he feels sorry for himself, I couldn’t help but admire that he never stopped fighting. The authors crafted an intense story in which I was quickly invested in the characters, their situation, and their developing relationship. This novel was long, but it never dragged or felt padded with unnecessary content.
